Find out more about the feedback process for your assessed work and exam results.
When it comes to marking assessments here at Surrey, we’ve been able to respond to your feedback by talking more about how we ensure our process is fair and consistent.
The animation below explains our 13-step process that we follow for every piece of summative work that you submit. You can find out more in on our exams and assessments pages.
You should receive coursework feedback within three semester weeks of the submission date for all formally assessed (‘summative’) work.
- You will receive a mark and normally receive written comments on your work. If you do not understand the written comments you receive, or want further explanation, you should ask to discuss this with your lecturer.
- Sometimes lecturers might choose to give different forms of feedback e.g. detailed marking grid, feedback session, podcast etc. Please check with your lecturer or module leader so that you are clear on what to expect.
- If you have any queries about your feedback or have not received it by the deadline specified please contact your faculty's assessments helpdesk who will look into this for you urgently.
For exams, you will not be given your script back, however you are still entitled to feedback on your performance, this may be personal and/or generic. Please discuss this with your module leader.
You may request to have sight of your exam scripts if required.
You are entitled to feedback for all your assessed work.
This animation is designed to help you understand the University’s assessment and feedback process and how it supports your learning. Assessments are not just about getting good grades, and there are six principles we follow to ensure that you can use feedback constructively to apply to your future work.

Accessing your results.
Where this is required, your progression status will describe the outcome from your recent assessments. Further information can be found on your progression status here.
If you fail a unit of assessment within a module, and the module is failed overall, you will normally be allowed one re-assessment of the failed unit, which will take place at the appointed reassessment period (August-September).
Upon successful completion of the reassessed unit, the mark awarded for the unit shall be the University pass mark:
- 40% for undergraduate (FHEQ Level 4, 5, 6)
- 50% for postgraduate (FHEQ Level 7)
- 50% for foundation year studies
- 50% for BVMSci Veterinary Medicine and Science.
If you fail your reassessment, you will be awarded the higher mark of the two attempts.
Examinations for reassessments are timetabled in the same way as normal examinations.
Where you have approved extenuating circumstances, it will usually be assessed in the same way as the attempt that was deferred, whether that was a first attempt or reassessment.
