Library

Find out about borrowing, reserving and renewing items.

The Library is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during semester time. You must have a valid campus card to borrow any item from our Library and you cannot issue items on someone else’s campus card unless written authorisation is provided.

You are responsible for all items borrowed on your campus card and for ensuring items are returned when requested.

Checking your account and payment of fines can be done via your library account or by downloading the MySurrey App on your phone or tablet.

Borrowing from the Library
Accessing our Library books

If you are on campus, you can search for a book on SurreySearch, and click the Locate button to see where it is shelved in the Library. Once you have found the book, you can use the self-service kiosks on Level 1, opposite the Library Welcome Desk, to issue it to yourself. Press borrow, and hold your campus card against the card reader, then place your books on the shelf. Books will be issued for seven days, and automatically renew unless requested by another student. Press done, and choose whether you want a receipt emailed.

Take a look at our ‘How to find a book’ video on our How to page for more information, or ask a member of staff at the Library Welcome Desk for assistance.

For those of you not based on campus, you may find our Click and Collect or Click and Post services helpful:

  • Find your items on SurreySearch – and request required items. To ensure a fair service for all there is a maximum limit of six requests per person.

A member of the team will be in touch if we have any questions, otherwise you can expect your item to be processed within two working days and then you'll be able to come to collect your items from the Library (or have them posted out to you). If you’re unable to come to campus you may opt to receive items via post instead.

Watch our how to guides for additional information.

Blocked library account

Your account will become blocked if:

  • You have fines totalling £30 or over
  • You have an overdue reserved item on loan to you (the block will automatically be removed on return of the overdue item)
  • You have been issued with a replacement charge for a lost or damaged book or item of equipment (Library Laptop, Logitech Webcam or Noise Cancelling Headphones)

You will be unable to issue or renew library items, collect requested books or submit a request for inter-library loan items if your account is blocked.

Speak to a member of staff at the Library Welcome Desk, Level 1, or email us for assistance.

Borrowing from other libraries

See our Borrowing from other libraries page for information about accessing other academic libraries.

Borrowing limits

You may borrow up to 30 items at one time.

Borrowed items will automatically renew after 7 days provided they have not been requested by another user. Items such as CDs, DVDs and scores are issued for one day and will also automatically renew.

If the borrowed item is requested by another user, it will be recalled and we will let you know when it needs to be returned via your University of Surrey email account. Please reply to this email if you need any further information or assistance.

You may only borrow one each of the following - Library laptop,  Logitech webcam, pair of noise cancelling headphones - at any one time.

Fines

You can view and settle any outstanding fines by downloading the MySurrey App on your phone or tablet or going to your library account.

If you are having difficulties returning a reserved item on time, please speak to Library staff at the Library Welcome Desk on Level 1, or get in touch via live on the Library homepage, or by email.

Books and other items

Fines will only be incurred on overdue items which are reserved by another user, at £2 per overdue day.

Library equipment

Library laptops are loaned for 4 hours or seven days, fines are charged at £1 per hour or part hour (please ensure you return within this time and plug the laptop in securely).

Logitech webcams and noise cancelling headphones are loaned for 8 hours. Replacement charges are issued for non-return of this equipment.

Fines are charged on all days that the Library is open, including weekends, bank holidays and university closure days.

InterLibrary Loans have separate fees - please see the InterLibrary Loan page for details.

Graduating

All outstanding fines are debts to the University and must be cleared before you graduate or prior to the expiry date of your membership with the Library.

Interlibrary loans

If you need to access material that is not available in the University Library, you may be able to request an InterLibrary loan.

Lost or damaged items

Items that have been damaged or lost will incur a replacement charge of £70.

InterLibrary Loans have separate fees - please see the InterLibrary Loan page for details.

Library equipment

The replacement charge for loss or damage for Library laptops and Logitech webcams is £500, and £25 for noise cancelling headphones.

Overdue fines may be payable in addition to the above fees.

Returning items

If you’re in the Library, you can return books through our self-service return units on Level 1. Alternatively, books can be returned in person via the book bin located outside reception at Manor Park.

If you are not able to return your books in person, please email library@surrey.ac.uk and we can advise further.

Watch our video on how to return a book for more information.

Please note, interlibrary loans need to be returned in person to staff at the Library Welcome Desk on Level 1 of the Library between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday - please do not use the book bins.
