The Family Study Room in the Library is a dedicated study space designed for University of Surrey students with children. Here you can work and study in a family-friendly, secure space alongside your children.
The space features a study area as well as a variety of comfortable furniture suitable for both adults and children, along with a selection of toys, books and small games.
Beautiful wall decorations from our Archives and Special Collections showcase illustrations from E.H. Shepard’s Winnie-the-Pooh. While the area is designed with students who have children up to 12 years old in mind, children of all ages are welcome.
You must register and have an induction before you can use the room, please see details below.
The Family Study Room is located on Level 2 of the Library, accessed via the orange staircase or lift. The room is located close to accessible toilets and baby changing facilities.
The Family Study Room has a large adult study desk and computer, as well as comfortable seating and a coffee table. Most of the room is dedicated space for children to relax and play in, with a wide range of books, toys, two activity tables, bean bags and a play den available for use.

The University of Surrey holds collections related to the illustrator E.H. Shepard, most renowned for illustrating Winnie-the-Pooh. The collections include: his personal archive, which is rich in artwork, manuscripts, correspondence, photographs and more; The Shepard Trust Archive, with a strong focus on his time as an officer in WWI and illustrations for a range of publications; and the HarperCollins Publishers Limited Collection, which is on long term loan to the University.
This last collection includes the original hand-coloured illustrations for the first colour editions of Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner as well as The Wind in the Willows.
We are grateful to The Shepard Trust and publisher Harper Collins, the copyright owners of these illustrations, for granting permission to use the artwork and text to decorate this room.
