The wi-fi network at the University of Surrey is called eduroam. Connect your mobile devices to eduroam wi-fi for uninterrupted connectivity between campus and your University accommodation.

To connect to eduroam wi-fi please follow the steps below or view the step-by-step guide (PDF):

  1. Complete online pre-registration.
  2. Your IT account is automatically created. The username and password you used to pre-register will be the same ones you need to access your IT account and to connect to eduroam wi-fi.
  3. Wait 24-48 hours after pre-registering before connecting to eduroam wi-fi. After successfully completing online pre-registration, your account can take between 24 and 48 hours to activate.
  4. Check your wi-fi is turned on. In the wi-fi settings for your device, select “eduroam” and enter your University of Surrey credentials username@surrey.ac.uk (e.g. ab12345@surrey.ac.uk) and your password. Follow detailed instructions and troubleshooting further down on this page.

Please note:

  • Some devices will require you to download the ‘get eduroam’ application from your device’s play store.
  • In your University accommodation please use the Residents Network (RESNET_WIFI) to connect your games consoles and smart devices.

How to connect your iPhone to eduroam wi-fi

To connect your iPhone to eduroam wi-fi:

1. Go to ‘settings’ by tapping on the “Settings” app icon.

2. Scroll down to the “wi-fi” option and tap on it.

3. Make sure your wi-fi is turned on by toggling the switch next to “wi-fi”.

4. Select “eduroam” from the list of available networks.

5. You may be prompted to enter your username and password. Enter your University of Surrey email (Username@Surrey.ac.uk) and password.

6. If you see a security certificate warning, select “Trust” to continue.

7. Wait a few moments for your iPhone to connect to the network.

8. Once connected, you should see a checkmark next to “eduroam” in your wi-fi settings.

9. You should now be able to access the internet on your iPhone through eduroam at the University of Surrey.

It is worth noting that you may need to periodically re-enter your username and password to continue using eduroam. Especially if you have not used the network in a while. If you encounter any issues connecting to eduroam, please reach out to the University of Surrey’s IT team for assistance.

If you need to disconnect from eduroam or remove any associated certificates from your iPhone, you can follow these instructions:

To disconnect from eduroam:

1. Go to ‘settings’ by tapping on the “Settings” app icon.

2. Scroll down to the “wi-fi” option and tap on it.

3. Find “eduroam” in the list of networks you’ve previously connected to.

4. Tap on the (i) icon next to “eduroam” to access more options.

5. Select “Forget This Network” to remove the network from your saved networks.

6. Confirm that you want to forget the network.

Your iPhone will no longer connect to eduroam automatically.

To remove any eduroam certificates:

1. Go to your iPhone’s settings by tapping on the “Settings” app icon.

2. Scroll down and select the “General” option.

3. Scroll down to the “VPN and Device Management” option and tap on it.

4. Find any eduroam certificates listed in the profiles section.

5. Tap on the certificate to access more options.

6. Select “Remove Profile” to delete the certificate from your iPhone.

7. Confirm that you want to remove the certificate.

Any eduroam certificates on your iPhone will be removed.

How to connect your Android device to eduroam wi-fi

To connect your Android phone to eduroam wi-fi please follow these step-by-step instructions

  1. Download the "geteduroam" app from the Google Play Store (or if using a Huawei device this is also available on the Huawei appGallery).
  2. Open the app and select "University of Surrey" as your institution.
  3. Enter your University of Surrey username followed by "@surrey.ac.uk" (eg ab12345@surrey.ac.uk) and your password in the respective fields.
  4. Tap on "Connect" and the app will automatically install the necessary eduroam configuration on your device.
  5. Your device will connect to eduroam and you should see the wi-fi icon appear in the notification bar.

That’s it! You should now be connected to eduroam on your Android device at the University of Surrey using the geteduroam app. If you encounter any issues connecting to eduroam, please reach out to the University of Surrey’s IT team for assistance.

Connecting to eduroam if you are unable to download the geteduroam app

  1. From the home screen, go to your Android's settings.
  2. Tap on “wi-fi” to open the wi-fi settings.
  3. Make sure that wi-fi is turned on by toggling the switch next to “wi-fi”.
  4. From the available networks, select “eduroam”.
  5. A window will appear asking for your credentials. Enter your University of Surrey username followed by "@surrey.ac.uk" (e.g. ab12345@surrey.ac.uk) and your password.
  6. In the "Identity" field, enter your University of Surrey username followed by "@surrey.ac.uk" (eg ab12345@surrey.ac.uk) and in the "Password" field, enter your University of Surrey password.
  7. Leave the "Anonymous Identity" field blank.
  8. In the "CA Certificate" or "Certificates" field, select "Do not validate" or "Do not check" option.
  9. Tap on "Connect".
  10. Your device will connect to eduroam and you should see the wi-fi icon appear in the notification bar.

If you need to disconnect from eduroam or remove any associated certificates from your Android device, please follow these instructions

To disconnect from eduroam:

  1.  From the home screen, go to your Android's settings.
  2. Tap on "wi-fi" to open the wi-fi settings.
  3. Find "eduroam" in the list of networks you’ve previously connected to.
  4. Tap and hold on "eduroam" until a menu appears.
  5. Select "Forget network" or "Forget".
  6. Confirm that you want to forget the network.

Your Android device will no longer connect to eduroam automatically.

To remove any eduroam certificates:

  1. From the home screen, go to your Android's settings.
  2. Tap on "Security & location" or "Security" (depending on your Android version).
  3. Scroll down to "Encryption & credentials" or "Credentials" (depending on your Android version).
  4. Find any eduroam certificates listed in the credentials section.
  5. Tap on the certificate to access more options.
  6. Select "Delete" or "Remove" to delete the certificate from your Android device.
  7. Confirm that you want to delete the certificate.

Any eduroam certificates on your Android device will be removed, and you will no longer be able to access eduroam until you reinstall the certificate or go through the setup process again.

How to connect your Windows device to eduroam wi-fi

Connecting your Windows computer to eduroam at the University of Surrey is a straightforward process. Just follow these steps:

1. Make sure you are within range of the eduroam wireless network.

2. Click on the wireless network icon in the system tray in the lower right corner of your screen.

3. Select "eduroam" from the list of available networks and click "Connect."

4. Enter your Surrey email address and password in the appropriate fields. Your username should be in the format of username@surrey.ac.uk (eg ab12345@surrey.ac.uk).

5. If prompted, select "Connect" to accept the security certificate.

6. Wait for a few seconds for the computer to authenticate your credentials and connect to the eduroam network.

Once you have successfully connected to eduroam, you should be able to access the Internet and other network resources, just as you would when connected to any other wireless network.

It's important to note that if you have previously connected to eduroam at another institution, you may need to reconfigure your settings to connect to the eduroam network at the University of Surrey by forgetting previous credentials or certificates. If you encounter any issues connecting to eduroam, please reach out to the University of Surrey’s IT team for assistance.

To disconnect your Windows computer from eduroam and remove any old certificates, follow these steps:

1. Click on the wireless network icon in the system tray in the lower right corner of your screen.

2. Select "Network & Internet settings" from the list of available options.

3. Click on "wi-fi" in the left-hand menu, then click on "Manage known networks."

4. Find "eduroam" in the list of saved networks and click on it.

5. Click on the "Forget" button to remove the network from your list of saved networks.

6. Now, you need to remove any old eduroam certificates from your system. To do this, open the "Run" dialog box by pressing the "Windows" key + "R" on your keyboard.

7. Type "certmgr.msc" into the "Run" dialog box and hit "Enter" to open the Certificate Manager.

8. In the Certificate Manager, navigate to "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" and "Intermediate Certification Authorities."

9. Look for any eduroam certificates in these two sections and right-click on them, then select "Delete" to remove them.

10. After you have removed all the old certificates, close the Certificate Manager and restart your computer.

Once you have completed these steps, your Windows computer will no longer be connected to eduroam, and any old certificates will have been removed.

How to connect your MacBook device to eduroam wi-fi

To connect your MacBook computer to eduroam at the University of Surrey, follow these steps:

1. Make sure your wi-fi is turned on.

2. Click on the wi-fi icon in the menu bar at the top of your screen.

3. Select "eduroam" from the list of available networks.

4. Enter your Surrey email address and password in the appropriate fields. Your username should be in the format of username@surrey.ac.uk (eg ab12345@surrey.ac.uk).

5. If you see a message asking if you want to "Verify Certificate," click "Continue."

6. You may be asked to enter your machine login details (the username and password you use to log in to your computer). Enter them if prompted.

7. Wait for a few seconds for your computer to authenticate your credentials and connect to the eduroam network.

Once you have successfully connected to eduroam, you should be able to access the Internet and other network resources, just as you would when connected to any other wireless network.

It's important to note that if you have previously connected to eduroam at another institution, you may need to reconfigure your settings to connect to the eduroam network at the University of Surrey by forgetting previous credentials or certificates.

To disconnect your MacBook computer from eduroam and remove any old certificates, follow these steps:

1. Click on the wi-fi icon in the menu bar at the top of your screen.

2. Select "Open Network Preferences".

3. Click on the "Advanced" button in the lower left corner.

4. In the list of preferred networks, find "eduroam" and click on it.

5. Click on the "Minus" (-) button to remove the network from your list of preferred networks.

6. Now, you need to remove any old eduroam certificates from your system. To do this, open the "Keychain Access" application on your MacBook.

7. In the "Keychain Access" application, click on "System" in the left-hand menu.

8. Look for any eduroam certificates in the list of certificates and right-click on them, then select "Delete" to remove them.

9. After you have removed all the old certificates, close the "Keychain Access" application.

10. Finally, you may also need to remove the eduroam profile from your system. To do this, go to "System Preferences" and click on "Profiles".

11. Find the eduroam profile in the list of profiles and click on it.

12. Click on the "Minus" (-) button to remove the profile from your system.

Once you have completed these steps, your MacBook computer will no longer be connected to eduroam, and any old certificates and profiles will have been removed. If you have any issues with this process, you can contact the University of Surrey IT team for further assistance.

How to connect your Linux device to eduroam wi-fi

To connect your Linux computer to eduroam at the University of Surrey, follow these steps:

1. Make sure your wi-fi is turned on.

2. Click on the wi-fi icon in the system tray.

3. Select "Connect to Hidden wi-fi Network."

4. In the "SSID" field, enter "eduroam" (without the quotes).

5. Under "wi-fi Security," select "WPA & WPA2 Enterprise."

6. Under "Authentication," select "Protected EAP (PEAP)."

7. In the "Username" field, enter your Surrey email address (in the format of username@surrey.ac.uk (eg ab12345@surrey.ac.uk)).

8. In the "Password" field, enter your Surrey password.

9. Select “No CA required”

10. Click on "Connect" to connect to the eduroam network.

Once you have successfully connected to eduroam, you should be able to access the Internet and other network resources, just as you would when connected to any other wireless network.

It's important to note that if you have previously connected to eduroam at another institution, you may need to reconfigure your settings to connect to the eduroam network at the University of Surrey.

To disconnect your Linux computer from eduroam and remove any old certificates, follow these steps:

1. Click on the wi-fi icon in the system tray.

2. Select "eduroam" from the list of available networks.

3. Click on "Disconnect" to disconnect from the eduroam network.

4. Now, you need to remove any old eduroam certificates from your system. To do this, open the "Certificate Manager" application on your Linux computer.

5. In the "Certificate Manager" application, click on the "Authorities" tab.

6. Look for any eduroam certificates in the list of authorities and select them, then click on the "Delete or Distrust" button to remove them.

7. After you have removed all the old certificates, close the "Certificate Manager" application.

8. Finally, you may also need to remove the eduroam profile from your system. To do this, go to "Settings" and click on "wi-fi."

9. In the list of saved wi-fi networks, find "eduroam" and click on it.

10. Click on the "Gear" icon to access the settings for the eduroam network.

11. Click on the "Forget" button to remove the eduroam profile from your system.

Once you have completed these steps, your Linux computer will no longer be connected to eduroam, and any old certificates and profiles will have been removed. If you have any issues with this process, you can contact the University of Surrey IT team for further assistance.

Connecting to eduroam
Campus accommodation only: wirelessly connecting your gaming and smart devices to RESNET_WIFI

To set up wireless internet connection for your games consoles, streaming devices and smart devices in your university accommodation, please use the RESNET_WIFI network. 

Please check our list of devices (PDF) to see if your gaming, streaming and smart device/s can connect to the University of Surrey’s wireless network. To connect your device/s wirelessly to RESNET_WIFI, you will need to carry out each step below for every device you are connecting:

  • Step 1: locate their MAC address so that you can
  • Step 2: register each device at managemydevices to
  • Step 3: obtain a password to connect to RESNET_WIFI.

Instructions for all three steps are available for the following devices:

If your device can connect to RESNET_WIFI (check this list of devices (PDF) to see if your device can connect), but instructions for that particular device are not included as a PDF above, please follow the three steps below: 

Step 1: In order to register each device, you will need to know its MAC address.

If you are unsure how to locate your device’s MAC address please see additional help below:

  • Apple TV - MAC address

From the main menu, choose Settings, then Generalthen Network. Look for the MAC address next to "Wi-Fi address".

  • Xbox One X - MAC address

Navigate to My Games and Apps, choose Settings, then Network then Advanced Settings. The MAC Addresses for the wired and wireless adapters should be displayed

Step 2: Register each device (this can only be done in your accommodation, not remotely)

Using your mobile phone or laptop visit the managemydevices page. Register your device here to obtain your RESNET_WIFI password.

Once you have obtained your password, you are ready to connect your device to RESNET_WIFI.

Step 3 Please follow the manufacturer’s setup instructions for how to connect your device to RESNET_WIFI. We have also produced detailed instructions for some devices if you would like to follow these.

Campus accommodation only: connecting wired devices to ResNet

You can plug in up to three devices using the wired ports on the back of the ResNet device in your room. Simply plug in the network cable from your device directly into one of the wired ports labelled E1, E2 or E3 to get connected.

The far left port (see image of ResNet device) can’t be used and some have caps fitted to prevent use. The remaining three ports are active for your use. You do not need to register your devices to use these ports. Please plug in your device and follow the manufacturer's instruction to setup and connect.

Guest wi-fi for visitors

Our guest wi-fi service is for visitors to campus who do not have a University of Surrey account. Please be aware that occasionally, a personal device cannot connect to Guest wi-fi.

Connecting to GUEST_WIFI
Guests from other eduroam institutions

If you are from a participating eduroam institution you will be able to connect to the eduroam network at the University of Surrey using your institutions login details.

If you have installed your institution’s eduroam CAT tool, you will not be able to connect to Surrey’s eduroam.

Before you visit the University, make sure you configure your device to work with the eduroam wi-fi network at your home institution without using the eduroam CAT tool.

If your device can successfully connect to eduroam at your home institution without installing the eduroam CAT tool, you should not need to make any changes to use your device at the University of Surrey, or any other institution which supports eduroam.

If you have issues connecting to wi-fi you will need to contact your institution for assistance with configuring your wi-fi device. The IT Team will only be able to answer questions regarding availability of the eduroam service in the University.

Wi-fi coverage across campus and university accommodation is available using eduroam – the wireless network available to staff, students and visitors from other eduroam participating institutions.

Eduroam is a worldwide community that allows any user (researchers, teachers, students, staff) from an eduroam participating site to get network access at any eduroam institution.

Problem Solution
Your device is connected to eduroam but there is no internet connection If your device has been connected to another network, sometimes your machine gets set with a static IP address (static DNS). This means that your device will 'connect' to eduroam but there won't be any internet access. The DNS needs to be removed and set to automatic. This is not something unique to the university and there is a lot of information about it on the internet. Please contact the IT Team on 01483 689898 if you need support with this issue.
Your device is not connecting to eduroam Your device is automatically remembering and using an incorrect password. Delete and replace that password with the correct one and try again.
Your device is not connecting to eduroam You haven’t waited 24 hours since activating your IT account. Try again after 24 hours.
