Some frequently asked library questions - if you can't find your answer, please contact us.

When is the Library open?

The Library is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week during semester.

Library staff are on hand to help with any enquiries between 8am and 5pm.

How do I get help?

Library staff are on hand to help with any enquiries between 8am and 5pm:

What study space is available?

The Library offers a variety of different study spaces to suit your needs:

  • Group study (levels 1, 2, and 4)
  • Individual study (levels 2, 3, and 5)
  • Silent study (levels 1, 2, 3, and 5).

Find out where these different areas are located by level using our Library floor plans, or see the board opposite the Library and Learning Hive, on Level 1.

Can I reserve a seat?

The majority of our study spaces are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Our dual monitors on level 5 and all of our group study rooms (rooms 1-11, on Levels 1, 2 and 4) are bookable for two hours per day. Final year students have priority seating in the Silent Room on Level 5, which is also bookable.

You can book all these spaces via our study space booking system up to two weeks in advance. You can make your booking by downloading the Juno StudyTime app (you’ll need to log in with your IT credentials and use the institutional code: SUR) or book through the web page.

Please remember to cancel your booking if it is no longer required.

What if I want to stay in my booked study space for longer than my allocated time?

If your booking is for a dual monitor PC on Level 5 you will be sent a reminder 15 minutes before the end of your session so you know your time is almost up. If the space is not booked after that time, you will be able to book it again.

If there is a booking already in place for your seat, you’ll need to vacate the space a few minutes before the end of your session.

Bookings for Group Study Rooms are for 2 hours per day only and cannot be extended.

Booking duration may be subject to change during exam periods – please check with Library staff.

What are my options for group work?

We have several options if you want to do group work in the Library:

  • Open plan group study area (Level 4). On this floor, you’ll find group study pods, as well as tech tables - perfect for collaborative study
  • Bookable group study rooms, on levels 1, 2 and 4, are available to book via our Juno StudyTime app or through the Booking webpage. For more information, see our FAQ: ‘Can I reserve a seat?’ above
  • Group study tables in the George Edwards Meeting Space and group work areas near the Green staircase, both on Level 1.

Don’t forget, we also have Logitech Conference Cams available to borrow if you need to record your group presentations – please just ask a member of staff at Library and Learning Hive (Level 1) who will be able to help with this.

How do I borrow and return books?

Take a look at our borrowing section for all information on borrowing from the Library.

Where can I find drinking water in the Library?

You can find drinking water dispensers on every level of the Library (near the green stairwell). They’re clearly marked on our floor plans too.

Please wash or sanitise your hands before using them, and try to avoid touching the tap with the top of your bottle.

How do I move around the Library if I have a disability?

The lift in the Learning Centre will take you to the Library entrance on the first floor. From there you will be able to follow directional signage to all other floors.

We have two lifts (one for the green staircase and one for the orange staircase) that are available to travel in either direction.

The doors on the orange staircase open automatically to improve access to levels 1, 2, 4 and 5. Please note to access level 3 you will need to use our ‘green’ lift.

If you need any assistance, please ask a member of Library staff.

What should I do if I’m bothered by noise in the Library?

All our study areas are clearly marked to help you pick the right space to suit your study requirements. We also have library and security staff roving the building during opening hours to ensure that each of our study areas are being used appropriately.

If you are disturbed by noise, please speak to a member of staff who will be happy to assist, or use our anonymous text alert service which is monitored during opening hours: 07972 218326. Staff will respond to your message as soon as possible.
